What do I have to do to be able to study in Australia and work too?
We understand that you are concerned about this while you study in Australia because we asked this same question when we first started out. The first thing you have to do after you apply is to understand and comply with your Australian student visas. The basic guidelines are easy.
- When your chosen course of study is in session, your student visa allows you to work 40 hours fortnightly. When your course is on a break or holiday, you may work unlimited hours.
- Any formally registered work that is part of your course of instruction does not count towards your twenty-hour limit.
- Volunteer work and community service does not count toward the 40 hours limit as long as you do not receive reimbursement for work; it is not something anyone would normally do for pay and is for a non-profit organization and/or benefits the community.
- If you have dependent family members that travel with you, and they have been granted permission to work, they must follow a similar set of criteria.
- They can work up to 40 hours fortnightly (at all times) and cannot start to work until the student visa holder has physically started school. The course must begin session.
- Once you have started a course towards your masters or doctorate, your dependent family member may have unlimited work rights with the exception of school hours if under consent to leave school age. (The age of 15 in most places in Australia.)
Types of Work Available For International Students Who Hold Australian Student Visas and Want to Work and Study in Australia
While you may apply for any work that you can find legally, most students enjoy working in the hospitality and tourism trade or administration. There are also a good many call centers that hire enthusiastic help with flexible school hours. When you work and study in Australia, you can earn from $10 to $20 per hour depending on your age and experience.
You can also tutor students in your field of study or in your language. A tutor can make up to $40 per hour.
Tax File Number To Work and Study in Australia
Do not forget to obtain your Tax File Number from the Australian Tax Office. You will also need this to open your bank account. When you apply for your TFN, be prepared with your name, current address, date of birth, date of arrival, (in Australia) your passport, and proof of school enrollment.
It is not a good idea to depend on your part-time Australian job as your only source of income.
